Preliminary System Analysis


Existing Liquid waste handling systems in the laboratories have suffered from several engineering and design issues as reported by Facilities and Scientific staff.

Summary analysis of staff interviews for system redesign parameters:

Scientist reported issues.

  • Frequent failure of system vacuum pressure

  • Back-syphoning of liquid material into the Vacuum system

  • Inability to collect waste in parallel with multiple other waste generating points

  • Manually activated waste collection results in forgetting to process waste

  • Bacterial growth in waste vessels in protective sterile environments is alarming.

Facilities Reported issues.

  • Transfer line blockages are frequent

  • Manual system control buttons are fragile and require maintenance and system outages

  • Clogs in the drainage system with possible fouling with bacterial or fungal growth.

  • infectious material or untreated nonsterile material concerns for maintaining safe environmentally responsible and permitted disposal
